How much will it cost?

Whether it’s a book, magazine, or billboard —the cost of your licence will depend on how you intend to use the work.

We operate standard licensing rates. Contact us for a precise quote for your project or with any enquiries. For bulk usage we may be able to organise a blanket licence or package rate for you, contact us for more information.

Below is an image licence price guide to some of our standard licence rates. Some fees are subject to negotiation with the artist and we will advise when this is the case. Discounts apply for public galleries and non-profit organisations (generally 50% off standard rates).

Books

Rates are calculated on the following factors:

  • Publication format – print edition, eBook or both
  • Print run
  • Whether the work will be featured on the cover or interior of the publication (cover reproductions need to be approved by the artist/copyright holder)
  • The size of interior page reproductions
  • Distribution – our print licenses cover Australia & New Zealand publication, additional territory loadings may apply for world rights

Rates start at $100 + GST for an interior thumbnail reproduction in a book with a print run up to 2,000 copies, and $750 + GST for cover use.  Rates increase for higher print runs.

Some discounts apply, including for educational text books and using multiple artworks (more than 5 images in one publication).

Monographic publications are generally charged at a percentage of the sale price. Contact us for a quote.

Brochures, gallery guides, annual reports

Rates may vary, depending on:

  • How you use it – whether the brochure is for advertising or editorial purposes
  • Cover or interior use
  • The size of the reproduction

As an example:

  • Editorial use (e.g. annual reports, gallery activities guide, exhibition brochures) – $200 + GST per image for a 1/2 page reproduction, with a print run up to 1,000 copies.
  • Advertising uses (e.g. catalogues, prospectuses, leaflets) – $400 + GST per work for a 1/2 page reproduction, with a print run up to 1,000 copies.

A 50% discount from these rates applies for public galleries and not for profit organisations.

Calendars and diaries

Rates may vary, depending on:

  • If they are promotional products or for sale
  • Cover or interior use
  • Print run
  • Monographic or contain works by different artists
  • Size of publication

Copyright fees start at $175 + GST for an interior reproduction in an A5 desk calendar with a print run up to 1000 copies, or $350 + GST for cover use. For larger wall calendars copyright rates start at $250 + GST for an interior reproduction in calendar with a print run up to 1000 copies, or $500 + GST for cover use.

Exhibition catalogues for public museums

Viscopy offers reduced rates for not for profit museum exhibition catalogues. Prices depend on print run, interior or cover use and the size of the reproduction.Rates start at $50 + GST for a thumbnail reproduction in a catalogue with a print run up to 2,000 copies. Front cover images start at $250 + GST.

Monographic exhibition catalogues are generally charged at a percentage of the sales price. Contact us for a quote.

Film / TV / DVD

Rates may vary, depending on:

  • Format (TV, cinema, advertising, online streming etc)
  • Broadcast territory (local/limited release, Australia/New Zealand or world-wide)
  • Length of licence

Permission and prices are by negotiation with Viscopy, as approved by the copyright holder. As a guide fees for an artwork reproduction in an Australian documentary could be $200 + GST.Commercial and advertising rates are higher.

Merchandise, including greeting cards and postcards

Permission and fees are by negotiation with Viscopy. The copyright holder needs to approve all requests. PDF mock-ups (and sometimes Printer’s proofs and product samples) need be provided to Viscopy for approval.

Most merchandise is licensed in the range of 20% of recommended retail price (RRP) with the exception of public museums which receive the discounted rate of 10% of RRP.

Newspapers, magazines & newsletters

Rates may vary, depending on:

  • Publication format – print, digital or both
  • Print run
  • How you use it – whether the use is for advertising or editorial purposes;
  • Whether it’s the interior or cover use and the size of reproduction on interior page

Rates range from:

Editorial uses start at $205 + GST per reproduction.

Advertising rates are higher and start at $263 + GST per work.

As an example a 1/8 page reproduction inside the weekend edition of the Sydney Morning Herald or The Age newspaper would be $718 + GST per image for an advertisement or $415 + GST for an editorial use.Discounts may apply for not-for-profit organisations and fine art magazines (generally 50%). Large scale print advertising – Billboards, public transport posters and street flags

Rates may vary, depending on size and number of sites, and the duration of the advertising campaign.

Rates start at $1,141 + GST for 1-4 billboards for up to 1 month.

On site exhibition signage/banners at not-for-profit galleries are charged at lower rates, starting at $570 + GST for reproductions 1m x 1.5m.

Commercial rates are higher.

Internet

Rates may vary, depending on:

  • How long the work will be online (works are generally licensed on an annual basis)
  • How the work is used, eg. banner image, home page or listing
  • How many Viscopy member works you will be reproducing. The more works, the cheaper the price per work.

For cultural, non profit organisations reproducing one work online for one year the fee is $100 + GST; for 11-50 works the fee is $50 + GST per work, per year.

Rates for commercial or advertising uses are higher and depend on how the image is used (home page, banner advertising etc.).

For museums, galleries and other organisations reproducing a number of works online we offer annual blanket licences based on the number of works used. Please contact us for more information.

  • Rates are per work, per reproduction.
  • Viscopy’s minimum invoice amount is $70 + GST.
  • These rates are valid at January 2017 and subject to change.


Our charges

75% of the viscopy copyright licensing royalties we collect in Australia and New Zealand (and 90% of the royalties we collect from overseas) is paid to artists. As a non-profit organisation, the remaining 25% (10% on overseas royalties) is retained by Viscopy to cover the costs of providing our services.
