Interdisciplinary artist Consuelo Cavaniglia has been announced as the Curator and Judge for the John Fries Award 2017.
Consuelo has worked in a range of contemporary art spaces, universities, regional art centres and artist-led initiatives. Independent curatorial projects have consistently flanked her practice – she has developed projects in galleries, museums, commercial and public spaces.
Currently based in Sydney, Consuelo is a lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney and an MFA candidate at Sydney College of the Arts. She was selected in 2015 to present at Cities in a Climate of Change, the International Award for Public Art Conference in Auckland; has been on the board of artist-run spaces Firstdraft and 55 Sydenham Road, and the team of coordinators of the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
Originally from Perth, she has been Coordinator of significant national art prizes, Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award and the Cossack Art Award, Art Consultant at Artsource, Exhibitions Coordinator at Fremantle Arts Centre, and Lecturer at Curtin University of Technology.
Consuelo’s work focuses on how we see and understand space. She is the recent recipient of the NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) from Arts NSW. In 2016 she undertook a residency in the Pilbara through FORM and was awarded a NAVA NSW Artist Grant.
